It feels kind of weird to rate someone's diaries, but they were definitely entertaining to read。 Although the tone in some parts did make me wonder whether he would have actually liked to have seen them published (which Emma Thompson acknowledges they were not sure about in the foreword, but where the blurb states the opposite)? Ever since hearing that his diaries would be published, I couldn't wait for the day that I could start reading them。 And oh my, what an emotional rollercoaster this is, Alan is such a good actor, director, and an amazing individual。 It's so out of worldly to read about how different your life can be when you're a famous and well-respected actor。 I had to wipe away some tears when I realized I had just read his last entry before he sadly passed away。 "After all this time?" Before you go into this, understand that this book is a literal diary。 It is written in diary form, almost like little tweets before Twitter was a thing。 But it is a fascinating look into the career of an actor and how often they are juggling multiple roles。 He also doesn’t hold back on his thoughts about other actors, films, and the entertainment industry in general, both good and bad。 I thoroughly enjoyed this and felt like I got an inside look at one of the most iconic character actor of our Before you go into this, understand that this book is a literal diary。 It is written in diary form, almost like little tweets before Twitter was a thing。 But it is a fascinating look into the career of an actor and how often they are juggling multiple roles。 He also doesn’t hold back on his thoughts about other actors, films, and the entertainment industry in general, both good and bad。 I thoroughly enjoyed this and felt like I got an inside look at one of the most iconic character actor of our times。 Alan Rickman is greatly missed by so many who loves his performances for decades。 For me, his career is for Always。 。。。more

Surprisingly a total snooze fest。 He goes here and there and see this and that but there is no depth and few details。 RIP

Fascinating deep-dive into the mind and thoughts of a fascinating actor。 He would’ve been great on social media in current climes。Perhaps more later, this has left me nostalgic and melancholy at the same time。 What a beautiful tribute to his loved ones and his fans。

Really 3。5。 A little disappointing。 There are some fun entries detailing his experiences in various films, but a lot of it also involves brief allusions to people whose names you may or may not recognize, without much annotation。 And Alan knew a LOT of people! He also had a lot of opinions and you can hear his voice when reading some of them。 Unfortunately, I suspect the media will latch on to certain quotes and blow them out of proportion。 I’m sure those thoughts would have been more polished an Really 3。5。 A little disappointing。 There are some fun entries detailing his experiences in various films, but a lot of it also involves brief allusions to people whose names you may or may not recognize, without much annotation。 And Alan knew a LOT of people! He also had a lot of opinions and you can hear his voice when reading some of them。 Unfortunately, I suspect the media will latch on to certain quotes and blow them out of proportion。 I’m sure those thoughts would have been more polished and balanced in the book he hoped to write some day。This reads very much like what it was, quick notes jotted down by someone who planned to eventually write a detailed memoir and sadly never got that chance。 But the illustrated entries are wonderful to see! I wish there were more examples of them。 There are some reproductions of the journal pages in the photos section and they are just magnificent—full of artwork and so brightly colored。 I would have probably liked a shorter selection of journal entries and lots more reproductions of those beautiful pages。 Still missing his grand voice and fantastic talent… 。。。more

Since this book is made up of actual journal entries it is very different than typical memoirs。 I enjoyed the raw style that come with a diary entry, but also could have done without the day to day happenings。 At times this became very dull。 Alan Rickman was very organized and had many wonderful things to say and that made the book very enjoyable。 Of course, the Harry Potter notes were my favorite。Recommended For: Alan Rickman fans。

Wow。 It's the accumulation of decades of his diaries from the 1990's to 2015ish。 I didn't read everything as it's a book to not read cover to cover。 His diary entries are short and document many events like going to supper, flying on a plane, etc。 That can be taken out when reading。 I briefly read the chapters when he talks about Harry Potter, which was cool to hear his perspective on it。 Wow。 It's the accumulation of decades of his diaries from the 1990's to 2015ish。 I didn't read everything as it's a book to not read cover to cover。 His diary entries are short and document many events like going to supper, flying on a plane, etc。 That can be taken out when reading。 I briefly read the chapters when he talks about Harry Potter, which was cool to hear his perspective on it。 。。。more

Rozhodol, ktoré denníkové záznamy nebudú uvedené? Madly, Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman。 Author: Alan Rickman。 I am a lover of autobiographies。 What makes a person tick? That person could be the bloke next door, or a celebrity。 I don’t even mind a biography, but it has to be an authorised one, one that the subject or the ‘estate of the subject’ has had input into。 There is nothing worse than reading a book of assumptions from someone who claims they knew the person they are writing about when they clearly don’t。 This is everything it says Madly, Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman。 Author: Alan Rickman。 I am a lover of autobiographies。 What makes a person tick? That person could be the bloke next door, or a celebrity。 I don’t even mind a biography, but it has to be an authorised one, one that the subject or the ‘estate of the subject’ has had input into。 There is nothing worse than reading a book of assumptions from someone who claims they knew the person they are writing about when they clearly don’t。 This is everything it says on the cover。 It’s the diaries of Alan Rickman。 I’ve been a lover of his acting work since the Die Hard (and yes, it is a Christmas movie) days, as well as his subsequent work in Sense and Sensibility, Galaxy Quest and of course, the incorrigible Sherriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves。 Of course, following those movies, a whole new generation learned about Alan Rickman as he embodied Severus Snape of the eight Harry Potter movies。 This book demonstrates the artistry that was Mr Rickman。 He wasn’t just a man of performance, a writer and director。 He was a man of words。 His diaries demonstrate that well。 Some days there are many words, some days few, but each entry allows you in his mind。 We get to read insights into his and others theatre performances。 We hear of his annoyance when from his stage position he is disturbed by audience noises (Note to self, stay quiet in the theatre)。 We are gifted access to what comes across as a fireside chat with an old friend。 Theatre, life thoughts, musings of pretty much everything, the craft of acting itself, and more。 Mr Rickman is certainly not afraid to criticise others with his words。 He talks of how performers “give their all but don’t get there”。 He tells of how “Michael Attenborough is one of the most indiscreet people he’d ever met”。 While he criticises some, he sings praises of others。 He talks of Daniel Radcliffe being “serious and focused, heading for a director/producer career”。 He talks of the warmth of Jerry Hall, after watching her stage performance in The Graduate。 While this book is everything you hope it will be, you also see the grumpy side of Alan Rickman。 The days when he is kept waiting for set-ups in movies。 You see the frustration through his words when things in life go wrong。 You can almost hear the anguish, when you read about people he loved, watched, and admired, pass away。 For me, this book was two main things。 It was an easy read。 The short diary entries made sure of that, coupled with each year having a list of what was to come。 But, it also felt a very private one。 An element of me initially wondered whether they were meant to be public or should be, but having an afterword written by his widow and soulmate, answered that question for me。 As general public, we always think we have an idea of what or who a celebrity is。 Diaries certainly give you a good idea as it is ‘their words’。 Alan Rickman came across as critical, mainly towards himself。 He showed his love, not only towards his soulmate Rima, but towards the friends and family that made up his inner circle。 He was known for his generosity。 The rumour being, that when people went to pick up the bill when they were out with him, he said “I have 2 words for you。 Harry Potter!” He will be forever loved by the older generation for his portrayal as Hans Gruber and the Sherriff。 The younger people of the world will forever remember him as Professor Snape。 We will all remember him for his words。 。。。more

If seeing “diary” evokes “autobiography” in your mind, that is completely understandable – but isn’t the case here。  Every page is filled with genuine day-to-day diary entries, written as one might expect from any set of journal entries from an actor’s perspective。 He was clearly very busy and constantly in motion。 Each entry consists of a brief recap of a particular day with a few thoughts on how a particular scene went and how he felt about others on set。 Emotions conveyed in his writing range If seeing “diary” evokes “autobiography” in your mind, that is completely understandable – but isn’t the case here。  Every page is filled with genuine day-to-day diary entries, written as one might expect from any set of journal entries from an actor’s perspective。 He was clearly very busy and constantly in motion。 Each entry consists of a brief recap of a particular day with a few thoughts on how a particular scene went and how he felt about others on set。 Emotions conveyed in his writing range from pleasure derived from successes, to, naturally, expressions of frustration when things did not go as anticipated。There were plenty of hotel stays, award shows, funerals, plays (acting, directing, and sometimes watching), restaurants, flights, and hospital visits。 There were also short musings on books read, movies watched, roles considered/rejected, and people encountered。 Reactions to big events (Lorena Bobbitt trial, 1994 Northridge Earthquake, 9/11, elections [UK & US], etc。) were fairly interesting to experience through his viewpoint。 He didn’t write particularly much on any one day/event/encounter; his focus was more on offering a glimpse or short recap。 I did (perhaps greedily) hope for more details on what it was like working with George Carlin in Dogma, or how he felt about accepting his role as Snape in Harry Potter。In retrospect, I think a greater reading experience could’ve been had by watching/rewatching a number of the movies he was in during the years in which he wrote this in order to gain more context for scenes and actors referenced in his journal。 (Die Hard (1988), Robin Hood (1991), Mesmer (1994), An Awfully Big Adventure (1995), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Michael Collins (1996), The Winter Guest (1997), Dark Harbor (1998), Dogma (1999), Galaxy Quest (1999), Harry Potter (2001-2011), Snow Cake (2006), Sweeny Todd (2007), etc。…)。 It looks like I have some homework to do – that wasn’t even all of the movies mentioned。All that said, I can’t quite tell whether or not I should have been privy to Alan Rickman’s personal experiences。 It read as something untranslated from his perspective, not intended for a wider audience; just something for him to privately reflect on when he chose to。 Some articles seem to suggest his endorsement of its publication, while the introduction in the book simply states “We do not know whether Alan would like to have seen his diaries published…”  A bit troublesome。  I hope he wouldn’t have minded my reading it。 。。。more

I really enjoyed reading Alan’s, often blunt and witty, views of the world and stories about his life。 He writes exactly as you would expect (possibly with more swear words) and is unabashedly open about how difficult he could be to work with。 I found it particularly emotional to read older entries knowing what was to come for him and those around him, and then reading his thoughts when those moments arrived 。The forward was beautifully written by Emma Thompson, and the afterward by his soulmate I really enjoyed reading Alan’s, often blunt and witty, views of the world and stories about his life。 He writes exactly as you would expect (possibly with more swear words) and is unabashedly open about how difficult he could be to work with。 I found it particularly emotional to read older entries knowing what was to come for him and those around him, and then reading his thoughts when those moments arrived 。The forward was beautifully written by Emma Thompson, and the afterward by his soulmate Rima Horton。 The things that stood out most were Alan’s humour, perfectionism, dedication, and love for his friends and for Rima。 His diaries showed so much vulnerability that you feel almost special to glimpse。 。。。more

This is an unusual book in a lot of ways。 It is “authorised” (by Alan Rickman’s estate), and includes an afterword from Rickman’s widow Rima Horton, but, despite some articles claiming that Rickman intended for his diaries to be published, the introduction states that “We do not know whether Alan would like to have seen his diaries published”。 That makes what follows a little uncomfortable, especially given the vulnerability and harshness of some of the entries。I also found it odd that this book This is an unusual book in a lot of ways。 It is “authorised” (by Alan Rickman’s estate), and includes an afterword from Rickman’s widow Rima Horton, but, despite some articles claiming that Rickman intended for his diaries to be published, the introduction states that “We do not know whether Alan would like to have seen his diaries published”。 That makes what follows a little uncomfortable, especially given the vulnerability and harshness of some of the entries。I also found it odd that this book has an editor (who wrote the introduction), but no real attempt is made to explain what was edited and why。 There are some editorial interventions intended to clarify who people are, or what film Rickman is talking about (etc。), but this isn’t done consistently, and some clarifications are instead given by footnote at the end of the year (which is not very helpful for anyone, like myself, reading an ebook copy)。 After the diaries (1993-2015), there is an appendix with “a selection of extracts” from Rickman’s occasional earlier diaries (1974-82), but again no explanations are attempted with regards to the editorial process。Despite having mixed feelings about the way this book has been published, I found Rickman’s diaries a really interesting and enlightening read。 There is much that doesn’t really matter, or is not entirely clear (which, again, emphasises the need for a clearer editorial process), but the entries are generally brief, and it is fascinating to get a glimpse inside this man’s head。 Rickman makes some excellent points, and I’m left with an urge to (re)watch so many of his (and others’) films, as well as to make more of an effort to visit the theatre。Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries are moving, thought-provoking, and utterly absorbing。 I’m glad that I decided to give this one a go。 。。。more
